1858 Koenigsberg Mesharet Moshe
LANGUAGE: HEBREW
worn copy in fair condition, cloth covers

Censorship in Jewish books is nearly as old as Hebrew printing, and can be found in books printed throughout the centuries under various governments and religious authorities. Generally, the censorship of Hebrew books related to subjects that were offensive to the church or deemed anti-government, but occasionally, the censorship was due to various other factors, at the liberty of the censor censoring the particular volume.

One such example is theis volume titled Mesharet Moshe was published in 1858 in the city of Koenigsberg, known today as Kaliningrad, Russia. At the time, the city was part of Germany, and was home to many Russian Jews who sought to escape the pogroms and antisemitism in the Russian empire. This particular copy of the book was censored by a Russian censor, presumably when the book was brought in to Russia. The book contains heavy censorship in several places in the volume, using a method used occasionally by Russian Censors of the period, which involved rolling tar over the offensive words, completely obliterating the text involved. The portions of the text here removed, was mostly not the expected portions which deal with gentiles or other religions, but rather all texts that involved intimate marital affairs. Apparently, this particular prudish censor was offended by any discussions of intimacy or laws regarding marital affairs and chose to obliterate them entirely.
