The author examines in turn all of the world's major armies as they prepared to meet the challenges of warfare in the second half of the nineteenth century.  He describes their main engagements, fighting qualities and organisation covering a period of history commencing with the Battle of Alma in the Crimea, the American Civil War and through to the eve of the First World War.

This 1995 edition hardback publication is in good overall condition; however, it is missing its dustjacket.  The pages are tightly bound and are free from tears, creases, and significant marks.  The brown hardboard covers displays some light rubbing and minor knocks to the edges and corners.  The book runs to 189 pages (24cm x 18cm), includes a working index, and is well illustrated throughout with photographs and illustrations.
