Cameos really are an amazing symbol of past and future, something to treasure as a family possession, to be looked after for the next generation. There are so many varieties of cameos available, carved out of gemstones such as agate, onyx and sardonyx. Cameos mainly have two layers of contrasting colours with often figuratively carvings etched into the stone or shell to create an almost three dimensional artwork. Cameos can also be made out of shell, coral, lava (limestone from Pompeii) as well as plastic, resin and glass. The word 'Cameo' comes from the Italian word 'Cammeo' from medieval latin camaeus, of unknown origins. The meaning of a cameo is that it represents not a fictional character but more is an instantly recognisable portrait of a person or occasionally a place or flower.

This particular stunningly beautiful, vintage agate gemstone cameo, is set into warm toned 18 carat yellow gold. It is a very pretty jewellery piece. The cameo itself is so intricately carved, making full use of the natural layers of the gemstone. The carver is highly skilful and has created a spectacularly well carved portrait in a figurative style. The striking lady, is picked out in a soft peach hue against the carnelian orange tones in the background. The lady has flowing hair tied up and is wearing a cowl collared dress with a flower clasp. Around the setting is a delicate open filigree design, which frames the portrait perfectly. 

 The cameo is in good used condition and is delicately made. The cameo pendant is stamped with 18k and Italy to the top of the bale. The frame is all gold with a stainless steel brooch fitting, that could be a later addition. This impressive cameo would be a fabulous addition to any collection.
