African masks in the Baule tradition were mainly used for entertainment. These masks are a unique form of African art and are characterized by a distinct dark patina and intricate hairstyles that are delicately adorned with "ngole." Baule portrait masks, alternatively called Gbagba, are a representation of elegant young men and women, whose valor or conventions are showcased through their hairstyle, location, and selection of scarification. The Kpan Kpan dance, which addresses societal issues or political projects, is gradually replacing traditional dances that feature these masks.
