ANTIQUE SHAVING CREAM POT WITH LID FROM ROGER & GALLET FRENCH PERFUMERS FOUNDED 1862 IN PARIS.

This absolutely charming ceramic jar with lid was one of the original jars used by the French perfumers Roger & Gallet in which they sold their shaving cream. Founded in 1862 in Paris, the company is still doing well and the brand is known world wide. An interesting detail of the history  of Roger & Gallet is that they were the official perfumers to Napoleon Bonaparte and they still make his favorite cologne, "Jean Marie Farina."The transfer design on the jar is extremely detailed with the brand name prominently displayed in the center of the “belly” of the jar.  The lid has the initials R G. for Roger & Gallet.  Indented into the base are the initials RG and some writing that I cannot read. I suspect it indicates the year the jar was made.

Usually the very detailed transfer design is in green.  In this case it appears that the green is much darker,  almost black, which may have been the color of the jars in that particular year. This is a unique color for this jar making it more rare.

Please look at the photographs to see where there are chips, slight crazing and any other defects. If in doubt,  we can send additional photographs.

The overall appearance of the jar with lid is good, especially considering its age.
