ELEGANT STERLING

SUGAR CASTOR

c.1928

An elegant sterling silver sugar castor

or sugar shaker, if you like.

Stamps under base tells us it was made

in 1928 by an English company for

FAIRFAX. ROBERTS & CO

SYDNEY

(who I am very happy to report

is still operating and have been

since 1858 – good on you

Fairfax & Roberts).

Fully hallmarked for Birmingham

1928 and has a registered number:

651949

The maker was an English firm:

Adie Bros Ltd

Frederick Street, Birmingham

(who were taken over by another

firm in the late 1960s)

This is a really lovely example of

a sugar castor and although it

has tiny dings and a few larger

dents here and there it still

presents well and of course

is fully functional and a very

nice thing.

CONDITION

In reasonably good antique/vintage

condition with a few signs of age

 and use.

It presents well but there are tiny

dings and a few larger dents

scattered all the way around

the ‘paneled’ body and there is

also an indentation in the pierced lid

but no damage – see photos.

Also it wobbles a bit.

There is a jeweler’s repair scratch

mark under the base too so

 perhaps the foot rim was

repaired at some point but

I can’t see where any repairs

were done myself.

The lid squeezes snugly onto the

body as it should so there is not

danger of it coming off when in use.

DIMENSIONS

It measures approximately:

19.3cm (7 5/8") high

7cm (2 ¾ ") widest point

Weight is: 144.4 grams
