A unique pottery vase with mustard glaze and Egyptian scarab beetle designs. Signed in the clay on bottom, "Batz 71," making it one of his early, pre carpal tunnel retirement pieces (after halting hand-throwing for medical reasons in the mid 1980s, Batz resumed production in 1991). Measures 8 inches high with approx. 5 inch maximum diameter. Very good vintage condition with a few very minor firing blems - no chips, cracks, heavy scratches, or repairs. Batz is listed at TMP (The Marks Project) 'Dictionary of American Studio Ceramics, 1946 Onward'. Biography: David Batz (American, 1944–1994) David Batz was an American artist known for Ceramic vases, bowls, porcelain totem structures, painting on handmade paper. Born in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico in 1944, Batz spent over 20 years in Cleveland, Ohio. Batz was a BFA/MA graduate from Rhode Island School of Design, and became a teacher of ceramics at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1970-1974, before opening the Fiori Gallery in Little Italy, and working full time as an artist in his own studio. His works were selected for exhibition in over 17 Cleveland Museum May Shows, as well as numerous other exhibitions. In addition to creating functional pottery, which he produced the most, he added glazed ceramic pictorial reliefs and sculptures to his repertoire. In the mid-80s Batz was diagnosed with a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome, a debilitating disease that weakens the muscles in the hand. He was told to stop throwing clay pots on his wheel. This only put Batz on a search for a new medium which soon became albaca paper. This paper is made from dried leaves of a banana plant and is similar to clay in that its durability and flexibility allow an artist to shape it into functional and sculptural items. David was able to return to throwing clay in 1991. David tragically died in 1994 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. His art has been under the care of his surviving partner Robert Jursinski ever since, and was last seen in a retrospective show at the Cleveland Artists Foundation/now ARTneo/in Lakewood in 2000 and an exhibition at Tregoning & Co. in 2018. 1968 -B.F.A.
