Description

This is a poster printed for the "Gerhard Richter Exhibition" at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

This is a poster only and does not come with a frame.

All posters by Gerhard Richter are unique in that Richter himself was involved in the production process, including design, size, and paper quality. The exhibition title is stamped in black foil.

The following abstract painting was borrowed from the catalogue.

Richter, who introduced the squeegee, a spatula-like tool used in silkscreening or as a window cleaner, to press and stretch paint onto canvas in the early 1980s as a component of painting, eventually began to use long squeegees, sometimes spanning the length or width of the picture plane (the artist himself called them "large spatulas"). The artist himself called it a "big spatula," which he made himself by combining an acrylic sheet and a wooden handle  The dragging motion of the tool, which is also a process of scraping off the paint while at the same time developing it on the canvas, creates a peculiar situation in which the artist cancels the act of painting while painting, and the characteristics of the paint as a material appear and are transformed on the spot into an image as if it were not paint at all. The effect is most noticeable in the works of the early 1990s, but the basic principles continue into the abstract paintings of the 2010s."
