Exceptional buddhist devotional  appliqué depicting Prince Shotoku ( Shotoku Taishi) . A key figure in promotion of Buddhism in Japan , Shotoku lived in 7 th century AD and dedicated his life to propagation of Buddhist dharma. He is often depicted on devotional scrolls, altars etc . This applique was probably a part of the large Buddha altar.    < UU36  >
