NEWFOUNDLAND 56a NSSC 39 1887 1/2c DEEP ROSE RED WORLD'S FIRST DOG STAMP MPH CV$45

Half cent, deep rose red shade, Newfoundland Dog stamp from the British American Bank Note Co. (Montreal) issue of 1887, engraved, no watermark, line perf. 12.0x12.0. Recess printed on medium weight, crisp, off white wove paper with horizontal mesh, dull yollowish gum. Approximately 40% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, paper hinge remnant. Few nibbed/shortish perfs here and there mentioned for the record.

Based on a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and designed by Joseph T. Rolph, this was the first stamp in the world to feature a dog. Listed in the 2023 edition of the Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue by Walsh and Butt as NSSC 39 with a price guideline of $45.00 US for a previously hinged mint stamp. NSSC suggests a premium of 6X for a stamp with mint, never-hinged original gum.
