Kumi Sugai (1919 - 1996)
Japanese painter and printmaker. After studying at the Osaka School of Arts and Crafts, he began working in commercial design in the advertising department of a railroad company in 1937. Driven by his interest in avant-garde painting, Sugai moved to Paris in 1952 and participated in numerous exhibitions in Paris and abroad, quickly attracting the attention of critics. Around 1962, he began to produce the "Auto Route" series, in which he painted geometric forms in clear colors. From the 1970s onwards, he began to create more simplified and streamlined works, mostly composed of circles and straight lines. Sugai is an unrivaled speed fanatic, and it is said that the motif of the production is the vision that comes to mind when driving at high speed in his favorite Porsche.
