CAPITAN AMERICA EDITORIALE CORNO

Synopsis

This story is a retelling of Captain America's origins. In the 1940's young Steve Rogers who was rejected from joining the military because of his frail body.

However he is chosen for a top secret project to create the perfect soldier.

Given a formula by Dr. Erskine his body is transformed into one of peak efficiency.

After Steve Rogers is transformed however, Erskine is killed by a Nazi spy, who in turn is killed by Rogers.

Erskine's secret formula would die with him, however Steve Rogers would become Captain America.

The tale would gloss over how Captain America would bust up Nazi spy rings as Captain America, but in his civilian guise he'd pretend to be a bumbling soldier under the command of Sergeant Duffy, and the mentor for his units mascot Bucky Barnes.

Bucky would one night stumble upon Steve changing into Captain America and would convince him to join him in combat as his sidekick, Bucky.

Their first mission together would be to break up some Nazi's sneaking into the country and using their own explosives to destroy the submarine they arrived in.

Notes

  • The Captain America story is a retelling of his origin in Captain America Comics #1. Due to the short length of the story, a number of key details are omitted. Information such as the composition and creation Captain America's original shield and the exact origin and nature of his powers are glossed over. This was a common practice for all of teh retellings of Cap's origins as originally presented in the golden and atomic ages. Elements of Steve Roger's past will be reworked into a modern era origin for Captain America. These revelations occur much later when reader interest in all of Cap's past necessitated the restablishment of old continuity and working it into the Avenger's long history.
  • The secret program to create American super-soldiers, Operation: Rebirth, is named for the first time.
  • This is the first appearance of Undersecretary Homer Simms, although he is not named in this issue. He is one of the military higher-ups involved in Operation: Rebirth. His inclusion is a slight retcon of Cap’s Golden Age origin story, as he wasn’t in the original story.
  • This is the first appearance of Doctor Murray Anderson. He is one of the lead scientists for Operation: Rebirth. He, also, was not part of the original Golden Age story.
  • The Marvel Wikia credits this as the first appearance of Cynthia Glass; she is Agent R in this story, the woman guarding the entrance to Erskine’s lab. However, there is an identical character called X-13 in the original origin story, so I’m not so sure. See for yourself.  Agent R is on the left, X-13 is on the right.
  • This marks the first of a number of consectutive World War II Era Captain America stories that will would be published in Tales of Suspense between this issue and Tales of Suspense #71 (in Italy in CAPC # 4). After that time the feature would resume "present day" tales.

Synopsis

A brief recap of Captain America's return as it was originally depicted in Avengers #4  (in Italy in THC # 9).

Notes

  • "Big PREMIERE Issue!"
  • This is the first silver age issue of Captain America, in spite of the fact that it's listed as issue #100. This is because the title originally used to be Tales of Suspense, which was rennamed to a Captain America title because at the time Marvel was phasing out it's old title which originally was for science fiction, horror, and fantasy stories and soon became dominated by Iron Man and Captain America stories following the resurgance in popularity for super hero comics in the 1960's.

Synopsis

At Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in Westchester County, New York, Professor Charles Xavier summons his students telepathically.

When the BeastAngelIceman, and Cyclops arrive, he puts them through a series of exercises to hone their mutant talents.

Xavier then introduces them to a new student, Marvel Girl, to whom he explains the purpose of his school: his students do receive an education, but they are also the first line of defense against evil mutants.

Meanwhile, at Cape Citadel, Magneto causes a rocket to crash.

The next day he takes over the whole base and claims it in the name of Homo superior (i.e. mutants).

Continued to next issue...

Notes

  • Professor Xavier claims that he lost the use of his legs in a childhood accident. It is later revealed in X-Men #9 (in Italy in CAPC # 11) , that he actually was disabled while fighting Lucifer. This retcon is critical to Cain Marko's origin X-Men #12 (in Italy in CAPC # 14) and Xavier's time in Israel and Egypt ,e.g.: X-Men #117 (in Italy in URC2S # 12-13) and Uncanny X-Men #161 (in Italy in URST # 47-48).
  • Cyclops is referred to as "Slim" throughout this issue. His real first name, Scott, is not revealed until X-Men #3 (in Italy in CAPC # 4-5).
  • Professor Xavier and Jean Grey claim not to know each other when Jean arrives at the school. It is later revealed in Bizarre Adventures #27 (unpublished in Italy) , and Classic X-Men #42 (in Italy in IXM Marvel Italia # 57), that the two of them had several training sessions prior to Jean's arrival at the school.

Trivia

  • This comic's title was later changed to Uncanny X-Men and continued under that name until its numbering was rebooted with a new Uncanny X-Men series in 2013. A second X-Men title was introduced in the 90's, was briefly renamed "New X-Men", and was finally changed to X-Men Legacy. 2010 introduced a third series to use the adjective-less X-Men title. 2013 introduced a fourth.
  • Iceman was originally drawn as a "snowman" when his powers are activated and he regularly threw snowballs as weapons. This would later be changed to give him more of an icy look rather than snow-like.
  • Professor X's "training machine" that is shown is a precursor to the giant Danger Room that is created in the mansion.
  • Although this issue is the first appearance of the X-Men, the team has already been formed. Their previous storylines are shown in other titles and flashbacks.
  • The newspaper that headlines Magneto's first terrorist act is a Daily Globe newspaper.
  • Magneto makes a statement in the air using levitating bullets. The phrase says "Surrender the base or I'll take it by force - Magneto". This phrase is similar to the one used by the Wicked Witch in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, produced by MGM Studios.
