Mariners win again, want more
SEATTLE -- In another year, the Seattle Mariners might be thrilled to be two games over .500 as they near the halfway mark of the season.  But for manager Jim Lefebvre, it's no time to be complacent.  So he greeted his players with the following message when they walked into the clubhouse Sunday after their fifth straight victory, a 12-inning, 6-5 triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers.  "Five-hundred will put you in about third place.  Third place, so what?  Our goal is to 10 over, then 20 over," Lefebvre said. "We want to keep winning.  Ask any guy in the clubhouse and he'll tell you our goal is not to play over.500 but well over .500."  The Mariners completed a three game sweep of the Brewers when Milwaukee reliever Tom Edens walked Matt Sinatro with the bases loaded and two outs in the 12th ot force in the winning run.  Seattle has won eight of its last 10 games and it third in the American League West, nine games behind Chicago.  The Mariners' 40-38 record marks the first time they've been two games over .500 since May 21, 1989.  "I don't think anyone is going to be satisfied with .500," said Harold Reynolds, who had two of Seattle's 12 hits.  "It's nice to be here but it's nothing to get overly excited about.  We know Oakland is capable of a lot more than that."  Milwaukee reliever Dan Plesac came away impressed with the Mariners.  "They've got a good team," Plesac said. "They've got great pitching and they're solid defensively."  Ken Griffey Jr. singled off Paul Mirabella (2-2) to open the 12th.  Jeffrey Leonard hit into a fielder's choice and Edgar Martinez singled Leonard to second.  Edens relieved and wild-pitched Leonard to third before hitting Tracy Jones with a pitch to load the bases.  Pete O'Brien's grounder to Edens forced Leonard at home, but Edens walked Sinatro on five pitches to force in Martinez with the winning run as the Mariners won their fifth straight.  "At the end, the wild pitch put us into a difficult situation," said Brewers manager Tom Trebelhorn, whose club has lost four straight. "Then we just walked ourselves into a loss."  Keith Comstock (4-2), the sixth Seattle pitcher, pitched 2-1/3 innings for the win.  The Brewers tied the game in the ninth off Seattle relief ace Mike Schooler when Darryl Hamilton led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Charlie O'Brien and scored on Bill Spiers' sacrifice fly.  Spiers' error in the eighth had enabled the Mariners to take a 5-4 lead.  With two outs, the Milwaukee shortstop misplayed Jones' grounder.  Chuck Crim then walked Pete O'Brien before Scott Bradley grounded a single up the middle to score Jones.  It was Bradley's 26th career pinch hit, tying a club record held by Larry Milbourne.  The Brewers managed only four hits before scoring three runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.  With one out, Hamilton, Charlie O'Brien and Spiers singled off Brian Holman to cut the Mariners' lead to 4-2. O'Brien scored on a groundout by Jim Gantner and Gary Sheffield's third hit of the day, a two-out single off Mike Jackson, scored Spiers with the tying run.  Seattle's first four batters reached base off Dennis Powell in the first as the Mariners took a 2-0 lead.  Harold Reynolds doubled, Henry Cotto singled and Griffey singled to score Reynolds.  After Leonard singled, Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to score Griffey.  The Brewers scored an unearned run in the third.  Spiers reached on second baseman Reynolds' fielding error and scored one out later on a double by Sheffield.  Griffey became the first player in the American League this season to record 100 hits.  He had three hits, his 30th multi-hit game of the season.
