Vintage Print: "Cliffs of Inishmore, Aran Islands, County Clare, Ireland"
Source: Earth from Above, published in 1999

Image description Title:

"Off the Irish coast, the Aran Islands - Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer - feature cliffs that rise to heights of 300 feet and guard Galway Bay from the rough winds and currents of the Atlantic. Inishmore, the largest of the islands, is also the most populous, with nearly 1000 inhabitants. For centuries the inhabitants helped to fertilize the soil of these islands by regularly spreading the rock mixture of sand and algae, intended to provide the thin layer of humus necessary for farming. To protect their plots of land from wind erosion, the islanders built a great network of windbreaking walls, a total of some 7000 miles in length, which lend these lands the appearance of a gigantic mosaic. The Aran Islands derive most of their resources from fishing, farming, and herding, and they attract a growing number of tourists to their many archaeological ruins."
