Product Description
Personnel includes: George Benson (vocals, guitar).
Originally released on A&M (3203).
THE BEST consists of material from Benson's CTI recordings from 1969 and 1970. "Footin' It," "Shape of Things to Come" and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" are from SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME; the Beatles tunes come from THE OTHER SIDE OF ABBEY ROAD. The guitarist is generally given the featured artist treatment, as the lone soloist facing off against a studio orchestra, usually arranged by Don Sebesky.
"Footin' It," the longest cut at just over five minutes, gives organist Charles Covington a little room to solo, and "Water Brother," though over far too quickly, gets into a bit of furious trading between Benson at his hottest and bluesiest, and an anonymous saxophonist. By contrast, "My Woman's Good to Me" and "Tell it Like it Is" are pure pop outings, complete with stomping horn sections and period accents such as congas and background singers. Benson lays out on guitar altogether on "My Woman," proving that he could have cut it purely as a soul/R&B singer. Not surprisingly, "Oh Darling" is the most successful of the Beatles interpretations here.
