NEWFOUNDLAND 152 9c MYRTLE GREEN CABOT TOWER 1928 LABRADOR PUBLICITY ISSUE MPH

Nine cent 'Cabot Tower', myrtle green from the 1928 'Publicity' issue, engraved, no watermark. There is a total of 20 perf varieties in this issue reported to date, 7 for the 9 cent value. Printed on heavy weight, white wove paper with horizontal mesh, whitish (almost colorless) gum. Excellent color and appearance.  Approximately 25% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging.  Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp.  Note: for some reason, stamps of the 9 cent value in particular were poorly perforated and a majority are found badly off center.

Stamp shown is a good representative of those that are available. If the stamp received fails to meet expectations, it may be returned for a replacement or full refund.

Cabot Tower stands on the top of Signal Hill, the height which guards the north-eastern entrance to "The Narrows", the entrance from the sea to St. John's harbour. It was on this hill that General Amherst compelled the French to surrender their last foothold in North America in 1762. The tower was erected in 1897 to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of Newfoundland by Jean Cabot. It was the scene of research by celebrated inventor Marconi who flew kites here in 1901 to pick up the first morse signal ever sent across the Atlantic. Further radio history was made here some twenty years later when the first telephonic conversation between the shore and a ship at sea took place between the Cabot Tower and the R.M.S. Victorian in mid-Atlantic.

In 1927, the British Privy Council, over Canada's objection on behalf of Quebec, confirmed the Dominion of Newfoundland's historical claim to Labrador. Newfoundland used the reward to publicize it's significantly enlarged landmass through a new series of stamps that hopefully would encourage additional tourism and economic development. The first of 3 series of stamps known as the "Publicty" or "Pictorial" (sometimes "Newfoundland-Labrador" or "Labrador Publicity") issues were printed in 1928 by De La Rue and Company of London. Soon after this printing, De La Rue lost it's contract to John Dickson and Company but refused to turn over the engraving plates to the new contractor. John Dickson then asked Perkins, Bacon and Company to produce "re-engraved" plates of most of the 1928 images which were subsequently used to print the 2nd Publicity stamp series in 1929-1931 and the 3rd Publicity issue in July of 1931. Paper watermarked with the Newfoundland 'Coat of Arms' was used for the first time in the printing of the 3rd Publicity issue.

Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. However, if it doesn't live up to your expectations you are always welcome to return it for a full refund - NO QUESTIONS ASKED. My feedback speaks for itself. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop. Please give me a chance to fix something that is not satisfactory to you before leaving negative feedback.

Although 3 and 4 star DSR scores may be considered "good" by just about any reasonable standard, they aren't as far as ebay is concerned. Anything but 5 ratings in a seller's DSR score may impact their ability to offer items for sale on ebay. Therefore, having an opportunity to earn your highest rating would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your consideration.
