The RE -202 recreates the Space Echo on an unprecedented level. Knowing the original well, BOSS revealed the reason for the legend sound by thoroughly pursuing elements that had not been noticed before. In addition, the RE -202 has new features that will help inspire the creativity of modern musicians. You can now extend the REPEATRATE, change the reverb type, use a fourth playhead that doesn't exist in the original, and save these settings to the console.

■What is tape echo?
Tape echo was the first effector that could produce an echo-effect, and its warm, dynamic sound attracted many musicians. In contrast to the digital delay, which is precisely effected by the computational processing of the CPU, the tape echo is a machine with a very simple structure, in which a magnetic tape is rotated by a motor, sound is recorded by the recording head, and played back by the next head. They are therefore susceptible to structural influences, and their sound can vary depending on conditions, motor speed and friction. Comfortable sound fluctuations add to the mix.

■The legendary Space Echo
Launched in 1974, the RolandRE -201 Space Echo was the tape echo of its time. Unlike the single-playhead tape echoes that were common until then, the three equally spaced playheads deliver rhythmic echoes. It also features an innovative free-running system that performs well with minimal load on tape.
There's also a built-in spring reverb for iconic sound, and these settings and controls are easily controlled by the front knob. In addition, the analog preamp section added an essence that brings out the appeal of the instrument, which is favored by musicians who are particular about the sound.

■Complete revival of the famous plane
In addition to the vast amount of data BOSS has accumulated on the Space Echo over the years, the company has extensively reanalyzed several vintage RE -201 units, as well as its own prized mint-condition original units. Careful examination of everything, including the recording/playback mechanism, motor operation, tape condition, and preamp character, has resulted in a complete re-creation of the iconic sound mechanism that was previously unknown.

■the extreme of obsession
The RE -202 pays the utmost respect to the original model, with particular attention to the layout on the panel and the response of the knobs.
The iconic MODESELECTOR knob in the center lets you choose from 12 different playhead combinations. A fourth playhead, which doesn't exist in the original, extends the Space Echo's tricky echo variations by five. In addition to the original SPRING REVERB, you can choose from a total of five reverb types, including HALL/PLATE/ROOM/AMBIENCE. In addition, the magnetic tape allows you to select the condition rather than NEW/AGED, which realistically reproduces the sound change of unstable behavior caused by the aging tape.
The WOW & FLUTTER knob controls the natural modulation effect caused by the unstable rotation of the magnetic tape, while the SATURATION knob adjusts the degree of distortion caused by magnetic saturation and preamplifier.
The gradual changes in pitch that occur when you turn the REPEAT RATE knob and the intense oscillating sound that occurs at the maximum INTENSITY are also true Space Echos. In addition, as with the original, the direct sound can be passed through the preamplifier. You can perform sound and make up with Space Echo's unique essence.

■Modernized features
The RE -202 has many features that modern musicians need. The REPEATRATE can be extended to twice the length of the original and can be set to match the contemporary music scene. You can also save your favorite settings and recall up to 4 memories on the console alone, and up to 127 memories when controlled from an external MIDI device.
It also has a tap-tempo feature that lets you change the REPEAT RATE to match the tempo of the song as you play. Also, by pressing and holding the pedal of the main unit, you can turn REVERB on and off, and turn TWIST and WARP on and off for an aggressive effect.
Input and output are stereo compatible, allowing you to fully appreciate the expansive, iconic reverb. In addition, input levels can be optimized according to connected devices. It can mute direct sounds, so you can use it not only for playing instruments, but also for live PA and other scenes.

■External Extensions
The RE -202 is equipped with CTL1, 2/EXP expansion terminals. You can assign tap tempo, memory up/down, and WARP and TWIST effects to the external footswitch.
By connecting an expression pedal, you can control multiple arbitrary parameters at the same time, saving the settings for each patch. The RE -202 also supports MIDI, making it an ideal control device for system building.
