ANTIQUE 1867 NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD
"MAP OF THE COUNTRY FROM LAKE SUPERIOR
TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN"

Available for purchase is a RARE and historically important railroad map.  It was published in 1867 by G.W. & C.B. Colton and illustrates the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad as it was envisioned at the time.  The map spans the area from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest including parts of southern Canada.  The route of the railroad line is illustrated in red, with an elevation profile view across the top.  Among the details shown on the map are the Pony Express route, wagon routes and overland mail routes, exploration routes and other proposed railroad routes, the locations of Indian tribes, mineral deposits, military forts, and much more.  Isothermal lines indicate a region's mean annual temperature, and the map's upper register contains an inset titled "Profile of the Route of the Northern Pacific Railroad."  This dissected view shows changes in elevation along the railroad.  Colton also includes information regarding the distances between points on the map and major cities and ports, over both land and sea.

The map originally accompanied a report by Edwin Johnson, Northern Pacific Railroad’s chief engineer during this era, on the progress of the railroad.  Published in 1868, this report was intended to garner support from Congress for federal funding to continue the railroad's expansion to the West Coast.  The Northern Pacific was the first projected and last completed of the three great transcontinental lines.  It was not until 1888 that it was completed, enduring recessions, mergers, and poor cost controls.  The railroad route was originally projected to end in Seattle but was instead routed to Tacoma.

This large and very detailed railroad map was issued as a folded hand-colored lithograph.  It measures approximately 43 3/4" wide and 23" tall.  This sharply delineated map is a superb example of Colton’s cartographic skills and is considered one of the finest maps of the region to date.
I purchased this map at a recent estate sale that had many rare books and historical documents.  This is an original 1867 map and not a reprint.  Please feel free to check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.

Condition of this historically important railroad map is GOOD.  I noticed one old tape repair along the top left margin.  There is also some edge loss and a few places of separation at the folds.  The map retains good colors.  Overall, this collectible map shows its age but still looks great and displays well.  It would make a fine addition to any collection.  Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.  I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase.

If you collect historical maps or documents, especially those related to railroads, don't miss your opportunity to purchase this offering.  My Buy It Now price of only $359 WITH FREE SHIPPING to any U.S. destination is a real bargain.  The only other copy of this map currently for sale has an asking price of $1,395.  So buy this map now before someone else beats you to the deal!
