Exquisite Rare Bronze Multi-Armed Bodhisattva Maitreya Figure - Khmer 'Prei Khmeng' Style. Pre-Angkorian Period

Dimensions: 41.28cm x 15cm x 8.5cm | Weight: 1.960kg

A captivating multi-armed Bodhisattva Maitreya figure cast in bronze, crafted in the Khmer 'Prei Khmeng' style during the Pre-Angkorian Period or later.

Behold a four-armed Bodhisattva Maitreya, standing confidently on a square plinth, arms gracefully raised, each hand bearing symbolic attributes, and displaying the 'Vitarka' mudra – a gesture of instruction. The figure's supple modeling and the graceful 'tribhanga' posture lend an unmistakable Indian influence to its form.

Draped in a low-hanging hip wrap, secured by a simple knotted cord, this figure's intricate features include a coiffure known as 'Iatamukuta' – a testament to the Prei Khmeng style. Notice the lithe, slightly muscled physique, youthful countenance, and contemplative gaze, all evocative of this distinctive era.

The facial features reflect the indigenous Khmer aesthetic with almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows, a broad nose, a wide mouth, a mustache, and elongated pierced earlobes. This figurine marries slender elegance with unyielding plastic vigor, cementing its status as a true masterpiece.

Condition: This remarkable piece boasts an authentic presence with minor abrasions, casting nuances, and a small surface fracture near the left elbow (see photos). These imperfections are a testament to its age and journey through time. The base, possibly a later addition, ensures the figure stands proudly. Minor casting flaws, pitting, and surface degradation bear witness to its age.
