InRadio 4.2 Future Women, July/August 2006

The Starlight Mints
Barsuk Records
bandStarlight Mints are a group of pop mutants: four oddballs whose love for archetypal pop music and AM radio has provided a rock-solid foundation for a whole bunch of inspired weirdness. The band members are from little Norman, Oklahoma, a stones throw away from Oklahoma City, hometown of that more infamous group of oddball popsters, the Flaming Lips. The Mints' new album on Barsuk is called Drowaton (spell it out backwards), and it brings together a wide range of sounds-from brass to strings to the otherworldly-for a rich and unpredictable musical ride.

Band of Horses
Sub Pop Records
bandHaving your debut album released on revered Sub Pop is no small compliment, but its not too surprising in the case of this duo of workhorses. Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and guitarist Mat Brooke formed Band of Horses in 2004 after honing their sound together for nearly ten years in stalwart northwest group Carissa's Weird. Says AllMusic, "Though Band of Horses aren't likely to be heralded as trailblazers, they do sound quietly innovative and genuinely refreshing over the course of these 10 sweeping, heart-on-sleeve anthems. Ultimately, the band's most winning trait is its delicate balance of elements-between gloom and promise, quiet and loud, epic and ordinary, familiar and new, direct and elliptical, artist and listener. Each of these aspects makes the others sound stronger and more complex, making Everything All the Time an album that's easy to get lost in and even easier to love."

Get Him Eat Him
Absolutely Kosher
bandGet Him Eat Him is a group of Brown University students with twin penchants for punchy rock and weirdo science. Their debut release on Absolutely Kosher, Geography Cones, takes its name from the most dangerous type of Cone Snail, a snail with a sting so deadly that its known colloquially as the "cigarette snail," in the belief that the victim will have only enough time to smoke a cigarette before perishing. Ouch! Anyway, in his spare time frontman Matt LeMay also writes reviews for Pitchfork, and that wide exposure shows on the album, even if one is pretty sure all but the straightforward indie rock releases end up in his dustbin.

Apollo Nove
Crammed Disc
Apollo Nove (a.k.a. "Apollo 9") is the new hot producer on the Brazilian electronica scene. He's come up with a fascinating debut album, Res Inexplicata Volans (official Vatican name for a UFO), consisting of 23 melodious, deep, moody songs whose atmospheres hover somewhere between psychedelic rock, eerie electronica and spaced-out folk. The album is even produced by the famed Air engineer Yann Arnaud. Apollo Nove is a crooner, songwriter, pianist and collector of over 60 vintage synths, keyboards and effects from the '60s, '70s and '80s.

Absentee
Memphis Industries
bandThe debut album from East London's Absentee is called Schmotime, and it's been receiving rave reviews in the British press. Music OMH says, "Schmotime is a louche swaggering bear of an album full of tales of drunk love, the following hangovers and bleary regrets, albeit with a certain twinkle in their eye. Like the sweet sweepings from the floor of pub to bedroom, Absentee roll around in the filth like one happy dog." American alt-country junkies are sure to take notice soon.

Catfish Haven
Secretly Canadian
bandOne of the newest to join the Secretly Canadian roster is Catfish Haven. Says Spin, "Catfish Haven, a trio of swamp-rockers whose Southern-fried riffs conjure up Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket (both of whom the trio have opened for), also find roots in the world of double-wides: They're named after the site of frontman George Hunter's childhood mobile home in rural Missouri." The band has since left Missouri behind, finding a home in more urban Chicago. The band members describe their music as, "Soulful howling over an acoustic guitar turned way up. Hopeful yearning for better days echoed through amps and a drum kit." See if you agree as you listen to track off their recently released album.

Death From Above 1979
Vice Records
bandDeath from Above 1979 is a Toronto-based Canadian indie rock duo with Jesse F. Keeler on bass/synths and Sebastien Grainger on vocals/drums. They eschew lead guitarist, playing loud synth infused dance-noise on the drum and bass combination alone. Though they were originally called just "Death From Above", the duo had to change their name early on after a legal dispute with New York City dance music label Death From Above. Their InRadio featured song, "Blood on Our Hands," comes from their 2004 release You're a Woman, I'm a Machine though word is they're currently recording a new album which will be released in three versions: the traditional bass/drums lineup, a full band lineup with musicians assembled by Grainger, and a remix album.

Quasi
Touch and Go
bandHusband and wife duos have a history in rock 'n roll, from Ike and Tina Turner and Captain and Tenille in the '70s to current staples on the indie scene like Mates of State and the White Stripes. Quasi emerged between those two moments, formed in 1993 by then-married Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes in Portland, Oregon. They've lasted together over 10 years, surviving the dissolution of their marriage and the popularity of other high-profile projects (Weiss drums for the all-woman outfit Sleater-Kinney, while Coomes used to play guitar in Elliott Smith's group Heatmiser). Quasi have even been quietly successful, releasing six albums and continuing to tour nationally and internationally. Their most recent release is When the Going Gets Dark, out on Touch and Go Records.

Robert Pollard
Merge Records
bandThough Robert Pollard's father groomed him to be a professional athlete, he realized while in college that music was his calling and he hasn't looked back. He formed the legendary Guided By Voices shortly after college while working part-time as an elementary school teacher and achieved rapid success with that group. Always a prolific songwriter, Pollard released his solo debut, Not in My Airforce, in 1996 while continuing to front GBV. In 2004, Pollard broke up GBV to concentrate on his solo work. His latest, From a Compound Eye, is roughly his eighth solo album, but the first that was consciously intended for a wider audience.

The Paper Cranes
Unfamiliar Records
Though they are still relative unknowns down here in the U.S., Vancouver's Paper Cranes are drawing raves from the Canadian press. Here's one excerpt from Now Toronto, "The Paper Cranes have a thing for melody....This EP is optimistic and spirited to such a degree that you'll happily shrug off the similarities [to The Smiths and The Cure]. New Pornos/Tegan 'n' Sara producer Howard Redekopp and the Rapture collaborators Run-Roc raise the production bar on a promising debut." We're featuring a track off the Cranes' Veins EP.

Lost Bayou Ramblers
Swallow Records
bandThe Lost Bayou Ramblers say it best themselves, "Over the past 300 years, a cultural amalgam has been percolating in Southern Louisiana. The resulting cultural distillate gave rise to both Bayou Country's world famous cuisine and a musical concentrate that conveys the passions, tribulations, and elations of the Cajun people. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the Lost Bayou Ramblers are the keepers of the flame, champions of Cajun music's cultural past." Brothers and lead instrumentalists Louis (fiddle and vocals) and Andre (accordion) Michot were immersed in roots Cajun music from birth, with their father and uncles already touring the world playing traditional songs as the band Les Freres Michot. With the Lost Bayou Ramblers, they mix original tunes with their vast Cajun repertoire of hundreds of early accordion dancehall tunes, pre-century fiddle tunes, and Cajun swing.

Magneta Lane
Paper Bag Records
bandSigned to little Paper Bag Records, Canadians French (bass), Nadia (drums) and Lexi (vocals & guitar) make up Magneta Lane. Formed in 2003, the band has released an EP and their new full-length, Dancing with Daggers. Lexi sings in a high alto range with velvety, sassy tone while French and Nadia keep the rhythm tight and urgent. Young, talented and dedicated, we're sure to see a lot from these ladies in the future.

The Stills
Vice Records
bandAnother Canadian rock band, Montreal's The Stills have known each other since the age of 12. The four art-schoolers played in various bands until forming a group in 2000. In 2002 they moved from their beloved Canada for a two-month stay in N.Y.C. to design a lush, swarthy pop style with the help of a four-track recorder. A deal with Vice Records followed before the year's end; however, joint shows with the Music, the Rapture, the Streets, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as Interpol were what cemented the Stills' dominating spot among the ever-changing rock scene. Without Feathers, the bands most recent release, is however a total departure from the sound that made them famous, relying less on new wave and post-punk and more on rootsy, '70s heartland rock.

Otis Taylor
Telarc Records
bandDenver residents in the 1960s knew when Otis Taylor was coming down the street; as a young man, he liked to play the banjo while riding his unicycle to school. He also picked up guitar and harmonica as a youngster-presumably with both feet on the ground-and by his mid-teens, formed his first groups. Taylor eventually took a hiatus from music in 1977, only to return in 1995. In his own words, he has "a way of saying something that seems to be more intense."He's a serious songwriter who has no qualms about tackling heavyweight issues like murder, homelessness, tyranny, injustice and, institutional dishonesty.

Sara Tavares
Times Square Records
bandSays Soundroots.org, "Winning two major musical prizes at age 16 might spoil some artists, but Sara Tavares took it all in stride. Her earlier music (including an album produced by Lokua Kanza) reportedly leaned toward gospel, soul, and funk. On the self-produced Balancé, Lisbon-based Tavares looks toward her family's roots in Cape Verde. Playing many of the instruments herself, she builds subtle, joyful songs that show how much of the island spirit still lives within her, assimilated through annual trips to Cape Verde."

The M's
Polyvinyl Records
bandChicago noise pop quartet the M's formed in the summer of 2000. They made their live debut in July 2001, with their clever, melodic approach quickly earning them a strong local following. Their debut full-length, a self-titled effort, was issued in the spring of 2004, and their sophomore release, Future Women, recently came out on Polyvinyl. Says AllMusic, "The M's' Future Women is a sprawling, thrillingly day-glo burst of indie rock glory. Combining the angular guitar attack of early-'90s guitar bands, the unrelenting hookiness of the mid-'90s chamber poppers, and the anything goes psychedelia of the Elephant 6 crew, the band is at once familiar and staggeringly fresh sounding."
