Rasmus Carl Rasmussen (1847-1923)
Danish School

An idyllic scene of children in the sand dunes preparing to go fishing whilst a variety of vessels ply their trade off shore. Late 19th century and signed with the artist’s initials R.C.R. bottom left. Rasmussen was a Danish landscape artist and follower of the Skagen School of painters. Skagen is a village in Northern Denmark which attracted an artists’ colony in the late 19th century emulating the French School of Impressionists. Their work often features, as with this painting, beach scenes under big skies painted using a bright colour palette.

Rasmussen was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Charlottenborg Academy between 1891-1899 and the World Fair in Chicago in 1893.
