The new ideal in the arts was opulence, to make life on earth the mirror image of heaven; it could produce such splendor as the jeweled cross (above), ordered by Emperor Justin II in the sixth century, and the studded enamel and gold icon of Archangel Michael (opposite), the work of a tenth- or eleventh-century Greek. With memories of the magnificence they had left behind and an official instructional on the iconography of the Church as their guide, Byzantium's missionary-craftsmen set forth to recreate the ethos of their revered Constantinople in the rude and rugged setting of medieval Russia."
