Original Motley Theatre Design sketch for an Anna Neagel costume.

This is a proposed costume for the actress Anna Neagle (1904 - 1986).  The title given to the design for this character is: Miss Anna Neagle 'Lady in Waiting' 1901.  The side notes explain context and materials for the costume: "Sable shoulder cape & muff  Lace ruffle  Grey suiting jacket & skirt  Dark brown velvet hat with cock's feathers  Lacey petticoat".  Signed in pencil to the lower right.
My research indicates that this costume design sketch was created for the film The Courtneys of Curzon Street, made in 1947.

The Motley Theatre Design Group was founded in 1932 by sisters Margaret "Percy" and Sophie Harris, and Elizabeth Montgomery.
This piece comes direct from the estate of an artist friend and student of the Harris sisters.

A rare piece, suitable for any collection, this drawing was created on the fine, light paper that was never meant to last longer than the production.  As such, it is in fine vintage condition.  Minor losses to the paper on Neagle's sleeves, and a small loss to the paper in the top left corner - all visible in the photographs.  But overall good condition.  Recently reframed and mounted on acid-free board.

Image is 33.5cm x 23.5cm, and the frame is 37cm x 27cm.
