Description

Don Ellis with his trumpet, black and white silver gelatin photograph on double weight paper by Giuseppe Pino, about 9 1/2 by 12 inches with the image measuring 7 by 10 1/2 inches, with the photographer's stamp and sticker on the back with his reference number 26797, and dated July 1977, in near excellent condition (the lower right corner is lightly creased).   The photo was taken while Ellis was on stage with his band at the Montreux jazz festival where Pino was the official photographer.  I purchased it and many other photos of Ellis at his estate sale in 1979 following his premature death.

Don Ellis (1934-1978) was an important jazz innovator whose main instrument was a four-valve trumpet.  Please see his biography on Wikipedia, which is too long to copy here.   He developed heart problems in the mid-1970s and one of his last public performances was at the 1977 Montreux, Switzerland jazz festival.  This photograph shows Don at his best before succumbing to his heart condition.

Giuseppe Pino (1940-2022) was one of the world’s best jazz photographers since the 1960s until his recent death.  Several books of his portraits of jazz greats have been published.   Vintage original photographs are scarce.
