Antique hand painted papier mache tray. Black (japanned) tray with scalloped rim measures about 19 by 24 inches and is painted with red, blue, and grey flowers and all-over gold feathering and leaves, with a central design of inlaid mother of pearl or abalone discs. A unique piece, probably mid-19th century.
In very good condition, lacquer has alligatored a little but has not cracked, some wear to paint on the rim -- see pictures.
