The 259 probably had the shortest life of the Long Beach Series of reels. This reel is basically a Penn 500 with a much lower gear ratio. The 500 was released in 1958 and instantly became one of Penn's most popular reels. With higher gear ratios becoming popular, the 259 was discontinued. First released in the 1940's and replaced by the 500 in the late 50's. In my opinion, the 259 is a much more durable design with double beauty rings on both side plates. Plus, there is not the "One Screw Take-Apart Feature," also making it a stronger reel. With the frame that I added, this reel will last several lifetimes, no matter how hard you fish it. As long as a basic service is done periodically. Low gear ratios are again becoming essential, so this reel really fits in any arsenal. Low gear ratios are designed to make it easier on the fisherman. This reel could be used for several fishing applications, except Yo Yo Jigging, or casting Surface Irons. That type of fishing needs a faster reel. On top of that, this is the only time I have ever seen a 259 tricked out, giving this reel some serious uniqueness. It was just serviced by the best Reel Service Tech in Orange County, California. He installed Carbon Drags and re-greased every moving part with the appropriate grease thickness required. He also shimmed the gear sleeve to alleviate the handle from moving back and forth, resulting in a much smoother retrieve. He was very surprised to see this build when I brought it to him. I added the frame & rod clamp, the spool, the e-lever, and the handle & knob. There is very little boat rash on this reel. It came together beautifully. The e-lever is the opposite of modern reels. Forward is out of gear, and backward is in gear. It's got a great freespool and a loud, durable clicker.
