東郷青児 Togo Seiji (1897-1978)
Western-style painter. Born in Kagoshima City, studied in France from 1921 to 1928. Influenced by the Stereozoic School and Futurism, he developed a sentimental decorative style after returning from France. After World War II, he became a leader of the Nika-kai, and was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1956, became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1960, received the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government in 1976, and was nominated for the Order of Cultural Merit in 1978. He painted many female portraits with luscious colors and decorative qualities.
