"As the crow flies, Laredo is fifteen hundred miles from the Virginia home of our first First Lady, but distance did not prevent the women of Webb County, seventy-five years ago, from founding the Society of Martha Washington on the Texas- Mexico border. Today, the society's members continue to assert their Americanism with the lavish Colonial Pageant and Ball during the week long celebration of George Washington's birthday in a land that still seems to belong to Mexico. For two Februaries, I photographed the seventeen or so debutantes presented at Laredo's most lustrous event. The young women wear dresses that can take a year to make and are embellished with pearls, crystals, silk flowers, silver cord, gold sequins, tiers of taffeta ruffles, and beaded lace. The dresses can cost as much as thirty thousand dollars and weigh nearly a hundred pounds."
