Abbas II Hilmi Pasha, born 14 July 1874; died 19 December 1944; reigned as the last Khedive of Egypt, 1892-1914. He was removed from power for his pro-Ottoman stance in December 1914. lmi in 1913; it became obsolete with his downfall.

The Abbas Hilmi Bravery Medal was established in 1913 by the Khedive (Abbas II Hilmi Pasha) as a means of rewarding N.C.O.s and men of the Egyptian Army who distinguished themselves. The medal was promulgated in the Condominium by the Special Army Order (Khartoum) of 10 May 1913, for those “mentioned in despatches for meritorious or distinguished service in the field or before the enemy.”

Recommendations for the award were sent to the Military Secretary at Khartoum, and it was essentially the counterpart to the British D.C.M. The medal became obsolete with the downfall of the Abbas II Hilmi Pasha, one year after he had created it. As a consequence very few of these awards are known to exist.
