"Ferrari 335 S"

Source: Ferrari, published in 1995

Description Title:

"335 S More than any other Ferrari model number, this abbreviation made up of three numbers and a single letter sums up the highs and lows of motor sport. And both ends of the spectrum were reflected on the same day.

On 12th May 1957, at the wheel of one of these machines, Piero Taruffi, then aged 51, won the very last Mille Miglia. No sooner had he crossed the finish line, than his wife reminded him of the promise he had made to hang up his helmet for- ever. At the same moment, his team mate de Por- tago's 335 S had run its race not far from Brescia, leaving a tell-tale skid mark peppered with rubber, as it lay in a dark ditch, a pathetic tangle of steel and aluminium. In the course of that fatal race de Portago took with him to o the grave h his American co-driver Ed Nelson, as well as ten spectators, innocent bystanders at the side of the road.

In 1957 the marque's sports cars were fitted with four overhead camshafts. They had been devel- oped by a team of engineers made up of Jano, Massimino, Bellantani and Fraschetti, who had combined elements of the Lampredi and Colombo engines used in the 290 MM. At first there was the 290 S, putting out 330 horsepower, which only ran once, in January's 1000 kilometres of Buenos Aires. There followed the 360 horsepower 315 S, with a considerably increased cubic capacity, which made its racing debut at Sebring in March. Then came the 335 S which at first produced 390 horsepower. Taruffi's win in the Mille Miglia was to prove to be a swallow that did not quite make a spring. When it went the distance, the Maserati 450 S was much too quick, while the four pri- vately entered Jaguars at Le Mans, which finished ahead of the 315 S of Lewis Evans/Severi, were far superior.

A quadruple success in Caracas, with two 335 S's ahead of two Testa Rossas, guaranteed Ferrari the world title, albeit in sad circumstances; the track was littered with broken Maseratis, some in flames, to the extent that the company was on the brink of collapse."
