LYDIAN STATER REPRODUCTION COIN
of KING KROISOS

The original of this coin was minted c. 550 BC, Sardes Mint

Diameter - c. 2cm

The lion attacking the bull motif on this coin type has been variously theorized as symbolizing the sun and moon, spring and winter.

The Lydian Stater was the official coin of the Lydian Empire, introduced before the kingdom fell to the Persian Empire. The earliest staters are believed to date to around the second half of the 7th century BCE, during the reign of King Alyattes (r. 619-560 BCE).

According to a consensus of numismatic historians, the Lydian stater was the first coin officially issued by a government in world history and was the model for virtually all subsequent coinage.
