VINTAGE 800 SILVER
SMALL HERALDIC BOWL
WINE TASTER or TASTEVIN
and
we've always thought of it as a
Wine
Taster or Tastevin because of
its
size and the domed/convex base.
The
majority of wine tasters of course
have handles and are referred to as
cups
but I have found a handful of
examples
on the internet that do not
have
handles - mostly dating to the
17th
& 18th centuries, for sale by
high-end
silver specialists.
The bowl has a repousse quartered shield
decoration in the base featuring two symbols
diagonally opposed - a lion rampant and a
Maltese Cross framed by four small
Maltese crosses.
It
is stamped on the outside rim:
800 SG (entwined)
800
grade silver was often used by European
countries as well as Eastern/Asian countries
so without knowing who SG is
(and believe me I've searched)
its hard to say where it was made or
when it was made but it looks European
to me, possibly French.
A very intriguing little bowl.
CONDITION
One tiny dent too small to photograph.
Other than this just general surface
marks as would be expected from
a piece of silver with age that hasn't
been over polished.

It measures approx: 8.9 cm (3 1/2")
across
and 3cm (1 3/16") high
It weighs: 61.4 grams
