A Parade of Ten 20th Century Elephants

Multi National

This is a fine herd of ten elephants hand crafted from all corners of the globe.

# 1 - is a Wooden African Bush Elephant with Trunk up, Mouth open.

10cm (4in) high trunk to toe by 9cm long by 5cm wide and in good condition overall but missing two tiny tusks which have dislodged through the years.

# 2 - is my personal favourite: a quite stunning stone elephant, hand carved and coloured in Kenya probably in the early 20th century.

Etched into the underbelly are these words:

“KENYA EQUATOR ALTITUDE 7747 FEET PETER”

7.5cm (3in) high by 9cm long by 3cm wide and in perfect condition with no faults, quite heavy at 203g.

#3 - is a smaller unpainted clone of  2 and has a couple of small chips, one to the ear and one to the chest.

#4 - is an Indian Paper Mache Asian Elephant beautifully decorated with glass wedges and colourful beads.

5.5cm (2 1/8in) high by 8.5cm long by 5cm wide and has beads and mirrors missing here and there

but not that noticeable.

#5 - is an Asian Composition Elephant on a platform base, Chinese I’d say as he is wearing a Yoke.

#6 - is a hand carved wooden elephant, smaller again, possibly Thai missing tusks.

#7 - is Jadeite or Greenstone from China or Myanmar.

#8 - is African Stone carved, Kenya I’d say.

#9 - is a miniature wood elephant.

and

#10 - is a solid brass African Elephant

Total Weight: 723g.

Trunk Up or Trunk Down?

There are many superstitions associated with the elephant.

Their ability to bring good luck is captured in the replicas of elephants and the trunk plays a major role in the superstitions regarding elephants.

Some people believe the trunks up bring good luck.

Others believe the trunk down will bring good luck.

Predominate superstitions in Western cultures indicate that the trunk of an ornamental elephant should always be facing upwards and in Eastern cultures it should be facing downwards for it to bring good fortune on the house in which it resides.

However in Thailand, the elephant itself is considered good luck regardless of the trunk being up or down.

So take your pick; Up, Down, or Who Cares.
