Identification and Taxonomy:
Species: Bigotinops dangeardi (Hupé, 1953); Family: Bigotinidae; Superfamily: Ellipsocephaloidea; Order: Ptychopariida; Class: Trilobita.
The systematics and identification of this clade and specimens are complex and explained below.
Lithostratigraphy: Tiout Member of the Igoudine Formation (Lower Cambrian, Series 2, Stage 3).
Biostratigraphy: Eofallotaspis Zone of the Issendalenian.
Age: Cambrian, Early Paleozoic Era. 521-515 million years old.
"Bigotinids belong to the earliest and least understood trilobite families. Their early occurrence “out of the nowhere” in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas (and in Siberia!) is one of the biggest trilobite puzzles."
Bigotinops dangeardi: in 2019, Geyer wrote that "Only one specimen is known from Hupé's original publications." (Geyer, G., 2019). Very few have been found last four years and the possible robust determination of this individual to the species level makes it one amazing discovery.
Description (main features):
A scarce plate of a rare species. Huge specimen. Excellent collector item.
Internal mould eroded on the thoracic central lobe displaced cranidium.
The glabella and cranidium's characteristics and the number of thoracic segments indicate that we are in the presence of one adult individual—a more than rare fossil record.
In general, the specimen is fairly preserved, showing almost all the key structures of the species. Good size for a complete specimen of this age and of this species.
Cephalon is typical of adult individuals: The plectrum in front of the glabella is distinct, palpebral lobes relatively short, their posterior tips not reaching the posterior border furrow. Interocular areas are similar to a quarter segment of a circle.
Complete thorax on all three lobes—a genuinely perfect specimen.
Conspicuous pleurae with evident pleural spines.
Elongated body. Not very distinct pygidium, but probably present.
It is a well-preserved specimen on its whole. Due to its rarity, this is one genuinely excellent collector item.

The Souss Konservat Lagerstatte, on the Northern slope of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas, is an exceptional geological place full of recent discoveries and descriptions that helped scientists better understand life on Earth during the Lower Cambrian period.
Episodic low oxygenated conditions on the sea floor are likely responsible for the exceptional preservation of animal remains in the upper Amouslek Formation (lower Cambrian, Stage 3) on the northern slope of the western Anti-Atlas, Morocco. This stratigraphic interval has yielded trilobite, brachiopod, and hyolith fossils with preserved soft parts, including some of the oldest known trilobite guts. The “Souss fossil lagerstätte” (newly proposed designation) represents the first Cambrian fossil lagerstätte in Cambrian strata known from Africa and is one of the oldest trilobite-bearing fossil lagerstätten on Earth. Inter-regional correlation of the Souss fossil lagerstätte in West Gondwana suggests its development during an interval of high eustatic levels recorded by dark shales that occur in informal upper lower Cambrian Series 2 in Siberia, South China, and East Gondwana (Geyer, G. & Landing, E. 2021).
