渓斎英泉 Keisai Eisen (1790-1848)
Ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. He first studied under Kano Hakkeisai and became a student of Kikugawa Eizan, but in reality, he learned Ukiyo-e on his own. He excelled at painting beautiful women. He perfected his own style in extracting the inner life of women, which was different from Utamaro's pursuit of an idealistic style of beauty. As an ukiyoe artist, Eisen reflected the decadent aesthetics of the late Edo period in his lustrous beauty paintings with the fragrance of grease powder.
