RARE 19th CENTURY MINIATURE
DUTCH REPOUSSE SILVER TEA CADDY
19th century miniature Dutch European Silver
Tea Caddy or Canister.
Decorated with romantic scenes of courting couples
which is a classic theme for antique Dutch silver items
in the Repousse design technique.
19th century miniatures are a direct copy of their
highly sought after 18th century versions produced
by some of the best Dutch silversmiths of their time.
The demand and rarity of the 18th century originals led
to the reproduction of these tiny items in the late
19th century but to get around paying the tax
on new silver they were hallmarked with faux
18th century Dutch silver hallmarks
and shipped to their retailers
tax
free as a result.
The true Dutch marks were often tiny and hidden amongst
the decoration on the body of the item.
The ones that landed in England for example had to be
re-assayed with contemporary English assay marks
to comply with English silver laws and it seems were
also stamped with the retailers cipher as we found
on a very similar example in the Sold Archives
of a prominent London antique silver dealer which
had the same faux silver hallmarks on the base
as this one and also had the English import
marks for London 1892 by Samuel Boyce Landeck.
Our example does not have any import marks and
so we conclude it was either exported straight to
Australia or bought in Holland.
It is definitley silver and selling as such.
Dutch silver grades vary from 800 (parts per thousand)
to 963 (parts per thousand).
