By the usual criteria of size, weight, and price, the Brother
HL-5140 ($230 street) is clearly a personal printer. At 9.9 by 15.0 by 15.1
inches (HWD) and 23.1 pounds, it's small enough to be a comfortable desktop
companion and inexpensive enough to be affordable. But the 21-page per minute
(ppm) engine spits pages out faster than many workgroup printers, with
good-looking text and photos, making it a slam-dunk winner despite its merely
fair graphics output.
Physical setup and driver installation are standard for a small
monochrome laser that connects through its USB 2.0 port. Performance, however,
is anything but standard. Not only is the 21-ppm engine notably faster than
you'd expecting for a personal printer, but the actual throughput is also
faster than printers we've tested with the same or faster engine ratings. The
5140's total time for our Business Applications suite (using Quality Logic’s
testing software and equipment; www.qualitylogic.com) was 7 minutes 42 seconds. That's 19
seconds faster than the 35-ppm
We rate the HL-5140 text output as just short of excellent: More
than half the fonts we test with were easily readable at 5 points, and some
were readable at 4 points. Its rating for photos was good, which is better than
most monochrome laser printers. But its graphics quality was only fair, which
is lower than we expect for a monochrome laser.
Graphics showed posterization, dithering patterns, and a problem
on some output that looked like machine banding, but on close inspection proved
to be an artifact of dithering patterns. With its default settings, the HL-5140
also failed to print lines against a black background on one of our Excel
tests, although this problem can be fixed by changing the driver settings.
