Lamp for Icon, Russian, Lampada Orthodox Antique old bronze and
glass 1970s

Lampada is a lamp used in Christian worship. The first lamps were used by Christians to light the dark caves in which, fearing persecution, they performed divine services.
Later, the icon lamps became an important detail of the festive and rich decoration of the Christian church.

The prototype for the Christian lamp was the common oil lamp common in the ancient world, used not only in everyday life, but also for religious purposes, which Christians eventually adopted.

In a broad sense, a lamp (“lamp”) is an oil-filled lamp, lit in front of icons or at the top of large stationary candlesticks. The symbolic meaning of the lamp is the eternal fire of faith in Christ, which disperses the darkness of evil and unbelief.

In the narrow sense, a lamp is a large portable candlestick (candilo), carried out by a deacon or priest during the small and great entrances of the liturgy, and also used in the hierarchal service.
In Orthodox liturgical books, the word "lampad" is used precisely in this sense.
