Gods and Mortals in Love

Author: Hugh Ross Williamson; Edmund Dulac [illus.]
Title: Gods and Mortals in Love
Publication: London: Country Life Limited, 1936

Description: Very Good / Very Good -.

London: Country Life Limited, [1936]. First Edition. Slim quarto; publisher's cream tweed cloth flecked with royal blue, dark blue topstain, in pictorial dust jacket retaining original price (12/6), housed in custom cloth slipcase; 82pp.; color frontispiece, eight (8) leaves of plates.

Jacket verso entirely reinforced with archival tissue backing and extremities heavily restored with extensive color touch-ups, with evidence of prior shallow ships and tears along edges and down folds; minor soil to rear jacket panel and textblock, rear free endpaper wrinkled, else Very Good in a Very Good, albeit heavily sophisticated copy of the uncommon jacket.

From Dulac's preface: "A book with coloured pictures and an illustrated book are not quite the same thing. One may say that each has its own function and its own appeal. This is presented as a book with coloured pictures" (p. [6]). Indeed, no American edition was ever published of this title, the illustrations having already been commissioned and used for the cover art of the Hearst Sunday magazine The American Weekly from February to April, 1931.
