BOYE HEMSTITCHER AND SHIRRER - ANTIQUE, UNIVERSAL SEWING MACHINE ATTACHMENT

~~ Carefully review the photographs as they serve as the main part of the description ~~

DESCRIPTION:

"This is the only attachment of its kind made that does not require the buyer to give the name of his sewing machine, as it is universal and adjustable to every family sewing machine." (Quoted from advertisement published 1909.)

The BOYE Hemstitcher and Shirrer is rare and very hard to find. It is 117 years old.  Highly prized by collectors, this design is unique and unmistakable. James Hartvick Boye was a prolific inventor. He patented several needlework tools (e.g. a needle threader and a tatting shuttle) but this Hemstitcher and Shirrer is the only sewing machine attachment Boye invented and manufactured. Within a decade Boye shifted his attention from sewing innovation to designing curtain hardware.

Made by the Boye Needle Company, this Hemstitcher and Shirrer was engineered for machines manufactured at the beginning of the 20th century. While I am sure there are a few exceptions (e.g. the Davis), the unique means of clamping this attachment to the sole of the presser foot should, in theory, make it possible to fit this attachment to almost any vertical needle, lockstitch sewing machine. However, I cannot guarantee that this Boye Hemstitcher and Shirrer will work with your specific machine. Exercise your best judgment before buying.

As a universal attachment, this BOYE Hemstitcher and Shirrer is an excellent addition to any vintage sewing machine attachment collection.

CONDITION:

This BOYE Hemstitcher and Shirrer is in good, gently-used condition. There are minor surface scratches due to age and prior mechanical use. The screw heads show some wear. There are a few tiny divots in the surface; these are original to the manufacture of the piece.  It is clean, shiny, and rust free. On the underside of the tapered needle-guide bar there are some small speckles (see photo #8). This may be chipping in the nickel plating. It is very minor. There is no active corrosion. Note: any "cloudiness" visible on the attachment in several photographs is the reflection of a studio light.

Please ask any questions before you buy.

Sunday is a day of rest. Should you send me a message on a Sunday, I cannot answer you until Monday. Thank you for understanding.

Offering BUY-IT-NOW without requiring immediate payment is a courtesy. Please pay within 3 days unless arrangements for payment are made with me BEFORE buying.

Should you want to purchase more than one auction I will happily combine shipping whenever possible. PLEASE add the items to your cart and request an invoice BEFORE you pay so I may send the adjusted shipping charge. I cannot adjust shipping once a purchase has been made because eBay does not refund the fees they charge sellers on shipping costs when a sale is recalculated. Requesting an invoice is the ONLY way I will combine shipping.

I will pack your purchase and ship within 1-2 business days after your payment clears. Once shipped, delivery dates are beyond my control. The USPS and all other commercial mail and package services have been slow of late. Shortly after I print your shipping label, eBay should provide you with a tracking number. All items are shipped with package tracking to verify delivery.

If you receive a "Delivered" notification from eBay but your package was not delivered, please contact your local post office immediately and provide them with your tracking number. In January 2024 I purchased an item from an eBay seller. I received a "Delivered by USPS" notification and package tracking stated, "Delivered In/At Mailbox". The package was absent. I called my local post office and reported this. Through GPS tracking of my mail carrier's route, the Post Master was able to locate and retrieve my package. It was delivered to me three days later.

Please message me should you have any problems and I will work with you to resolve the issue.

I hope you enjoy a blessed day :o)
