Description

Robert Lax, A Poem for Thomas Merton with drawings by Emil Anonucci, Journeyman Books, New York, 8 pages, 5 ½ by 8 ½ inches, 1969, inscribed to “Michel and Edith” and signed “Bob” on the rear cover in ink, in very good condition (there are small stains on the front and back covers).  The booklet is printed in blue on brown stock and illustrated with line drawings by Emil Antonucci.  The booklet is inscribed on the rear cover to the film composer Michel Michelet and his wife Edith.  It comes from the estate of Michel Michelet.

Michel Michelet worked with several lyricists when he composed music scores for the movies and popular songs, especially during the 1940s and 1950s.  One of the lyricists was Robert Lax.  In 1949, they worked together on the film Siren of Atlantis; Michelet wrote the score for the movie and Lax was one of the screenwriters.

Robert Lax was a close friend of Thomas Merton.  Their correspondence was published. Occasionally described as a hermit, Lax did little to advance his literary career. His sparing use of words qualifies him as one of the founders of literary minimalism.  Signed copies of his publications are scarce.
