very old mid 19th century children's book entitled 'The Picture Pleasure Book for 1855 - 500 Illustrations' -- published by D. Appleton of New York in 1855 - this is the 2nd Series of 1855 - 1st series was 1854 --
-- contains 500 small engravings by famous artists of that time including Walter G. Mason -- includes a few short 'stories,' early comic strips in a way, including 'Wedding of the Little Man and Little Maid;' 'Puss in Boots' and 'Mother Hubbard and her Dog'- perhaps the first versions of these fairy tales that were illustrated in print -- an amazing compendium of nearly unique pre Civil War 19th century children's art -- this book is hardcover and measures 11 by 13 1/2 in. with 60 pages --

-- this appears to be extremely rare- in fact this may the first copy that has come to light for a long time -- Walter G. Mason also did a similar Australian Picture Pleasure book that is available online - this American one is listed on the rare children's book site '19th century Juvenile Series' as "These books have not been seen. [Series 1 and 2] First noted in advertisements in 1858." --
