This is the English translation of Ernst Müller's famous work, Geschichte der Bernischen Täufer, originally published in the German language in Switzerland in the year 1895.  

Müller served as a minister in the Reformed Church in Canton Bern, Switzerland, where he first encountered local Anabaptists (or "Taufgesinnten" as they preferred to call themselves).  As he came to appreciate the group's rich history, and the extent to which they had been persecuted for over 300 years, he began to research and document this history.  

Müller also explored the group's possible pre-Reformation roots, their activities during the Reformation and the following three centuries.  His detailed accounts of their confessions of faith, persecution, imprisonment, suffering, sale as galley slaves, expulsion from Swiss soil and their wanderings through Europe and eventual arrival in America can now be read for the first time in English.

Geschichte der bernischen Täufer has been often referenced by many researchers and historians, but has been largely unavailable to an English-speaking audience.  

This scholarly, but very readable book, is a classic in Anabaptist studies, and a "must-have" for anyone interested in the history of the Amish, Mennonites, Hutterites, and Swiss Brethren (or, in German, Taufgesinnten, Wiedertäufer, Mennoniten, Mennonisten, Schweizer Brüdern).
