Cy Twombly

Born 1928, died 2011. Born in Lexington, USA. Moved from New York to Italy in 1957.

In 1965, he began his career at Haus Lange Museum, Germany, and traveled to the Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Belgium, and the Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 1968, "Paintings and Drawings," a solo exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum, USA. 1975, "Paintings," a solo exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum, USA. Paintings, Drawings, Constructions 1951-1974" at the ICA Philadelphia and traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, U.S.A.; "Dessins 1954-1976" at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (1976); "Paintings and Drawings 1954-1977" at the Hoyt Museum of Modern Art, Paris, France (1979). In 1988, he participated in the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art, and in 1988, in the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art. A Retrospective" began at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and traveled to the Menil Collection, Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles and the New National Museum, Germany in 1994. Fifty Years of Works on Paper" began at the Hermitage Museum, Russia, and traveled to The Pinakothek der Moderne, Germany; Centre Georges Pompidou, France; Serpentine Gallery, England; Whitney Museum of American Art; and the Menil Collection, USA. He has had solo exhibitions around the world, including "Sculptures" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (USA) in 2012, "Portraits." at the Centre Georges Pompidou (France) in 2016, and "Portraits." at the National Portrait Gallery (UK) in 2019. In Japan, he held a solo exhibition in 2015 at "Works on Paper, 50 Years of Trajectories," Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.

In 1996, he was awarded the "Praemium Imperiale, Painting Division" and in 2001, he was awarded the "Golden Lion" at the Venice Biennale.

His works are on permanent display at the Brandhorst Museum and the Menil Collection Museum in the U.S., and are in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou (France) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (U.S.). In Japan, his works are in the collections of the National Museum of Art, Osaka, Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, Chiba, and Iwaki City Museum of Art, Fukushima.
