This is a 'Buy it Now' for an 1880 Second Afghan War Medal with no clasp to 25th (King's Own Borderers) Regiment.

The medal has the correct engraved naming as follows:

6B/645 PTE. T. BUTLER. 1/25TH REGT.

Medal confirmed on Afghan roll.

Thomas Butler was born about 1842 in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.

In 1860 Thomas was serving with the Oxfordshire Militia, and he was released from his obligations as a Volunteer when he attested for service with the army in Dover on 7th February 1860. His occupation is noted as a labourer and he elected to serve with the 25th Regiment Foot, which shortly after became the King's Own Scottish Borderers.

From his records it appears Thomas had two service numbers while serving with the regiment, 494 and 645.

During the Second Anglo-Afghan War between 1878 to 1880, the 1st battalion of the regiment formed part of the 2nd Division, which was renamed the Khyber Line Force while guarding the lines of communication between Kabul and Peshawar.

The medal os in good VF condition and comes with two pages of the Afghanistan medal rolls for the 1st battalion with Thomas' entry, plus fourteen (14) pages of Thomas's service and medical records. These are quite extensive and contain a great deal more information on him. they include his release sheet from the Militia, and also inform us that Thomas was tried by court martial four times, and after 19 years 212 days service he was discharged from the army as being no longer physically fit for service.

He appears to contracted his illness and disability due to his service in India and Afghanistan, and on his discharge from the army he lived in Walsall near Birmingham. His Afghan medal being his only entitlement and we will put these 16 documents onto a CD for the buyer. 

We've not checked the records on Ancestry etc for Mr Butler, so plenty of scope for further research.
