Antique Paper Fabric Map of

c.1831+

 

There is no date or signature or any indication of age on this map.

However I can date it approximately from the naming of New Granada.

The Republic of New Granada was an 1831–1858 centralist unitary republic consisting primarily of present-day Colombia and Panama with smaller portions of today's Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil. 

This early naming of this country indicates that this map was made no earlier than 1831 and no later than 1858.

Please note that Canada was named 'British America' and Alaska was still 'United States Territory'.

 

This map is hand Coloured and Hand Printed.

 

There is, at the top of the map an early version of the Great Seal of the United States with the words "pluribes unum" meaning 'one from many',

"/eɪ ˌplʊərɪbəs ˈuːnəm/ /eɪ ˌplʊrɪbəs ˈuːnəm/ ​a Latin phrase, meaning 'one from many', which was chosen for the Continental Congress when a single country was created from the thirteen colonies. (1774-1789).

The phrase appears on the Great Seal of the United States and on many US coins".

This is a very interesting map, please note the positioning of Asia just north west of Alaska and Ireland just east of Greenland with the British Islands in relief.

 

Measures: 82cm x 66cm.

Weight: 364g.

 

CONDITION: Warning: In poor original used condition and showing wear consistent with age and use.

The top wooden bar is detached and there is a 24cm horizontal tear across the top, just below and to the left of the Great Seal, with another small vertical 4cm tear to the left.

The majority of the map is undamaged however I would call it fragile and becoming brittle.

It needs and deserves major restoration and/ or preservation.

It will be delivered rolled and it is being sold 'As Found'.
