OUR ORGANIZATION CONFERENCE has as its subject the most important item on our Brotherhood's agenda for 1969 - the negotiation of new and improved agreements with the railroads of the United States.
This meeting takes the form of a collective bargaining policy conference. We will present our proposals for what we should be seeking from the carriers, in behalf of our members. It is our joint responsibility today to examine and discuss these proposals . . . to make such changes as we see fit . . . and to adopt them as the collective bargaining policy of our Brotherhood.
There is no secret about the general outline of what we wish to negotiate with the carriers.
Let me tell you one thing right off . . . this union of ours is going to go out to get a lot of money for our members. A lot of money!
BRAC, in this year of 1969, is going out for the biggest package in our history.
We're going for a big package because our people need big protection, in a national economy that is getting more and more out of balance.
Somewhere down the road, of course, we're going to be criticized because we're trying to do something for railroad employes. You know how it will be . . . there'll be a column by Alsop, and a column by Evans and Novak, and a lot of other columns and editorials.
