Rare King Edward VIII Coronation 1937 Musical Marbled Ceramic Jug by Arthur Wood

This is a fine Arthur Wood commemorative pitcher to celebrate the 1937 coronation of King Edward VIII. These jugs are scarce, some were made with a musical element in the base and are very rare.

The jug has a surface decorated in relief laurel wreaths, floral symbols representing the elements of the United Kingdom. On the front there is a portrait of Edward in profile looking left framed in a laurel wreath and surmounted by the Imperial State Crown and displayed with a scrolling banner beneath, that reads:

12TH MAY 1937

In a band that runs around the jug parallel to the base it reads:

CORONATION KING EDWARD VIII

The back also has a laurel wreath, this one contains the royal cypher, ‘ER’, and is surmounted by the Imperial State Crown. The band that runs close to the base contains the salute:

LONG LIVE THE KING

The handle and poring lip are adorned with acorns and oak leaves. The jug has a golden toned glaze that is subtly marbled with green.

The music box works well and clearly plays the tune, ‘For he’s a jolly good fellow’. The music box winds smoothly, it has a pin that when set down on a table, it stops the music playing, as soon as you lift the jug up, the pin shifts position and automatically plays the tune.

The jug, surprisingly, retains the label for Arthur Wood, just below the pouring lip, on the base it retains another label, advising that the music box is not to get wet.

The jug is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines, crazing, scratches. It is in mint unused condition. There is a tiny firing fault on the handle.

The jug measures approx.18.6cm tall by 14.3cm diameter at the base by 18cm from spout to handle by 12cm diameter at the rim.

This is a very rare Edward VIII coronation piece, a great addition for a collector.
