IRONWORKS
This is the story of the Grumman Aircraft Corporation from the earliest days to the present.
Affectionately known as Ironworks due to their aircrafts' dependability during the Second World War, Grumman is one of the most respected manufacturers in the world. From Leroy Grumman's initial dream through the building of centreline floats for Vought seaplanes in the 1930s to the development of the A6 Intruder, possibly today's most sophisticated aircraft in terms of avionics, the Grumman Corporation has constantly been in the forefront of aviation.
In this book, Terry Treadwell, author of Submarines With Wings and European Correspondent for the US Navy's Naval Aviation News describes in detail and as near chronologically as possible Grumman's aircraft manufacture from the FF-1 biplane and the legendary fighter aircraft The Wildcat, Hellcat, Avenger, Cougar and Panther to today's computerised FSW X-29.
Ironworks has its role in Space also; with the OAO (Orbiting Astronomical Observatory'); the lunar module in which man flew to the moon; the wings of the Space Shuttle Orbiter  all these were built by Grumman who most recently appointed one of the teams to work on the Space Station Programme Support contract.
With a plethora of superb photographs, this fully illustrated history of the Grumman Corporation's total aircraft output will be of great appeal to all who are interested in aviation history.
