Antique Travel Lap Desk Embossed Leather KKA Priv Inkwell ABM Besthoff New York

This piece has so much going on.  It is marked "ABM BESTHOFF & SON BROADWAY NY".  A quick search found that this company both produced and imported fine leather goods from the late 1800's until the time they filed for bankruptcy in 1913.
The inkwell is marked KKA Priv,  a mark of the Austrian Navy.  This lid flips open by releasing the snap catch.  It retains its glass insert with some tiny chips on the top edge and dried ink inside.  It is missing a metal outer cover cap.  Beside this is a divided leather lined compartment. The flip lid to the compartment does not stay open on its own.
The leather is richly embossed with mini travel scenes with people and animals.  Most seem to have an Asian or African theme.  It is in really good condition for its age, supple with no cracks but there is wear.  It is flexible and not hard.  The interior has damage the interior pockets have some ink stain, scratches and it is releasing from the sides.  The 4 corners of the writing surface that would hold paper are all intact.  As is the side pen holder.  The back is paper covered hard board or wood and shows wear from use and storage.  Overall closed size is approximately 9"W x 16"L; open width is approximately 18".
